Introducing Ikigai: Rediscovering Purpose at Every Age
There’s a Japanese word I think about often in this work: Ikigai (生き甲斐).
It roughly translates to “reason for being.” The thing that gets you up in the morning. The intersection of what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and yes, sometimes, what sustains you.
We talk a lot about physical health as we age. Nutrition, mobility, medication management. All essential. But we don’t talk enough about this question:
What is my loved one’s reason to get up this morning?
Because purpose doesn’t retire. It doesn’t expire at 75, or 85, or 95. It just needs a new shape.
Maybe it’s teaching a grandchild to bake the family recipe.
Maybe it’s the weekly call to an old friend.
Maybe it’s tending a small garden, or finishing a story only they remember the ending to.
At Senior Options, we’ve seen what happens when someone rediscovers their ikigai. The shift is real. Engagement returns. Mood lifts. Sometimes even physical health improves, because the mind and body are working toward something again, not just passing time.
This is why our care plans go beyond logistics. We ask what matters to this person, not just what’s wrong with them. We look for the intersection of ability, interest, and meaning, and we build from there.
Aging well isn’t the absence of purpose. It’s the rediscovery of it, in a new form.
What’s your loved one’s reason to get up in the morning? It might be worth asking.
