7 Things to Do With Your Parents Before It’s Too Late
We say it every day without thinking: “I’ll call them tomorrow.” “We’ll do that next time.” “There’s no rush.”
But there is a rush. There always was.
At Senior Options, we sit with families every day who are navigating the middle and later chapters of their parents’ lives. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned in this work, it’s that the moments people wish they’d had aren’t complicated. They’re simple. They just require showing up before the window closes.
Here are seven things worth doing now, while you still can.
1. Record their voice
Not a formal interview. Just them, talking. Their laugh, their expressions, the way they tell a story you’ve heard a hundred times. One day, that recording will be one of the most precious things you own.
2. Cook a meal with them, their favorite recipe
Stand in the kitchen together. Let them tell you the steps they never wrote down, the substitutions they always make, the story behind the dish. Some recipes only exist in someone’s hands until you ask.
3. Ask about their dreams, their regrets, the decisions that led them here
Not the polished version of their life. The real one. What they wanted to be. What they’d do differently. What they’re proud of that no one ever asked about. These conversations don’t happen by accident, they happen because someone decided to ask.
4. Film their laughter
Not a posed photo. The real thing, mid-laugh, unfiltered, alive. It’s the version of them you’ll want to remember most.
5. Look through old photos together, and ask who’s not there anymore
Don’t just ask who’s in the picture. Ask them to tell you about that person. The names and the faces are only half the story, the rest disappears if nobody asks while there’s still someone who remembers.
6. Go back to a place that mattered to them
The house they grew up in. The restaurant from their first date. The block they played on as a kid. Visit it together, if you can. Let them tell you what it looked like before, what it meant, who they were there.
7. Let them teach you something
A recipe. A repair. A card game. A prayer. It doesn’t matter what it is, what matters is that they’re the one who knows, and you’re the one learning. It’s a role reversal that won’t come around forever.
None of these things require money, planning, or perfect timing. They just require presence.
At Senior Options, we help families navigate the practical side of aging: care, safety, decisions that feel overwhelming in the moment. But we also believe deeply in the parts of aging that have nothing to do with logistics. The stories. The connection. The time that’s still there, if you reach for it.
So don’t wait for the “right moment.” This is it.
Which of these have you already done, and which one are you going to do this week? I’d love to hear in the comments.
